What to Expect in Your First Pottery Class

So, you’ve signed up for your first pottery class – congratulations! Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous, or a little bit of both, you’re about to embark on a creative journey that’s as rewarding as it is fun. To help you feel prepared and make the most of your experience, here’s a guide to what you can expect in your first pottery class at The Northern Pottery.

1. A Warm Welcome

When you arrive at our studio, you’ll be greeted by your instructor and introduced to the space. Our classes are kept small and friendly, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get to know your fellow classmates. After a quick orientation, we’ll dive into the wonderful world of clay.

2. Tools, Materials, and Setup

Your workspace will be set up with everything you need to start creating, including:

• Clay (your new best friend!).

• Basic tools for shaping, smoothing, and decorating.

• Aprons to keep you clean (but don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy).

We’ll guide you through the tools and show you how to prepare your clay for your project. Don’t worry if it feels unfamiliar at first – you’ll quickly get the hang of it!

3. Step-by-Step Instruction

Each class begins with a demonstration where your instructor shows you the techniques you’ll be using that day. In your first class, you’ll learn the basics of handbuilding or wheel throwing, depending on the course you’ve chosen.

For handbuilding classes, you might start with simple forms like pinch pots or coil bowls, while wheel throwing classes focus on centring the clay and forming basic shapes. We’ll be there to guide you every step of the way, so there’s no need to worry about “getting it right” – the process is all about experimenting and learning.

4. Plenty of Hands-On Time

Once you’ve watched the demonstration, it’s your turn! You’ll spend most of the class working on your own project, with your instructor offering tips and assistance along the way.

Expect to get a little messy – it’s all part of the fun! As you work with the clay, you’ll discover how to shape, smooth, and refine your piece. Remember, pottery is as much about the journey as the final product, so enjoy the process.

5. Wrapping Up

At the end of your class, you’ll clean up your workspace and set aside your piece to dry. If you’re attending an ongoing course, you’ll continue working on or refining your project in future sessions.

For taster workshops, your completed piece will be dried, fired, and glazed by us – and you’ll be notified when it’s ready for collection (usually within 4-6 weeks). It’s always exciting to see how your creation transforms in the kiln!

6. A Supportive Community

One of the best things about taking a pottery class at The Northern Pottery is the sense of community. You’ll be surrounded by people who share your enthusiasm for trying something new, and there’s always time to chat and share ideas during class.

Tips for Your First Class

Dress for the Occasion: Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little clay on, and tie back long hair.

Bring an Open Mind: Pottery takes practice, so don’t worry if your first piece isn’t perfect – it’s all about learning and having fun.

Ask Questions: Our instructors are here to help and love sharing their knowledge.
