Dive into the art of handbuilding and discover the endless possibilities of working with clay—no wheel required! At The Northern Pottery, our Beginner Handbuilding Classes introduce you to versatile techniques like pinch pots, coil building, and slab work. Perfect for total beginners or those looking to enhance their skills, these classes provide a creative foundation in shaping and decorating clay by hand.

What You’ll Learn

Across 8 weeks, you’ll explore:

  • Pinching, coiling, and slab-building techniques to create functional or sculptural forms.

  • Texturing and surface decoration methods, including carving, stamping, and slip application.

  • Planning and finishing your pieces, including glazing and preparation for firing.

Each class is designed to build your confidence and inspire creativity, giving you the tools to craft unique and personal pieces.

What’s Included

  • 8 x 2-hour classes in our fully equipped studio.

  • All materials, including clay, tools, and glazes.

  • Kiln firings for up to 5 completed pieces.

  • Expert guidance and a supportive, friendly environment.

 

Alternatives and Progression

If you’re keen to dive deeper into handbuilding, we offer follow-up workshops like Wild Clay Exploration and Advanced Surface Decoration. These are perfect for continuing your journey and refining your skills.

 

Already completed two or more handbuilding courses? Consider joining one of our intermediate-level classes to explore more complex projects and techniques..

Studio Policies

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone:

  • Missed Classes: Make-up sessions are not available, but we offer open studio access (where applicable) to catch up on practice.

  • Refunds and Transfers: Bookings are final. Refunds are only offered if the course is cancelled by us. Transfers may be arranged with advance notice and a $25 administration fee.

  • Materials Use: Each student is allocated a fixed amount of clay and firings for up to 8 small pieces. Additional clay or firings can be purchased.

  • Age Limit: Participants must be 16 years or older.

 

Class Details

  • Duration: 8 weeks

  • Class Times: Multiple options available (e.g., Thursday evenings or Sunday mornings).

  • Cost: $550 per term, including all materials and firing.

  • Classes do not run on public holidays. The term will be extended to accommodate any missed sessions.
